Accidents de parcours, Ying Gao, 2003
Le trajet labyrinthique du quartier de Hutongs à Pékin est le thème central de ce projet. J’ai transposé ces chemins tortueux, appelés à disparaître au nom de la modernité, sur une série de tricots en laine. Un travail de structure a été fait à partir des gabarits de base, de nouvelles coupes ont été créées suite à une série de manipulations et de déplacements de pinces d’ajustement. J’ai tenté de défier ainsi les règles de la coupe et de l’assemblage. Les vêtements ont donc un aspect décousu et déconstruit, faisant état du processus de création plutôt que du produit fini, mis habituellement à l’avant-plan.

The central theme of this project is the labyrinthic network of passages in Beijing’s Hutong quarter. I transposed these tortuous pathways—fated to disappear for the sake of modernization—onto a series of knitted wool sweaters. I worked with structure using basic templates, and introduced new cuts following a series of manipulations and moves of the fitting pleats. In this way, I attempted to defy the rules of cut and assembly. The garments thus have an unstitched and unassembled appearance, which speaks more to the process of creation than to the finished product that is usually the main focus.
